Empowering-Communities Great Yarmouth Lithuanian School starts its 5th year.
The Great Yarmouth Lithuanian School is funded by Empowering-Commnities Communities and has just started its 5th year. The school was set up after Gary Pettengell was voted Person of the Year in Lithuania in 2007. Gary was inspired by stories of the ‘book carriers’ who smuggled books and newspapers across the border during the Russian ban on Lithuanian publications.
This forty-year period, unique in world history for its character and significance, was marked by a heroic struggle for human rights and liberties. The book-carriers or book-smugglers frequently lost their freedom or their lives. At Empowering-Communities we are committed to helping the Lithuanian community retain its language and culture and at the same time helping settle in the UK.
